My cat is overweight. How do I transition him to a feeding schedule?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Hi! The last time I was at the vet, he was concerned about my cat's weight. We are currently free-feeding him a grain-free dry food (along with a can of wet food every evening) but I want to transition to a feeding schedule. What is the best way to do this? Should I just start removing his food, or are there certain steps I should do to ease him into a schedule? How often and how much time between feedings is ok for a cat his age? Thanks in advance for your help!

I would start offering him food 2-3 times per day. Leave it down for like 30 minutes and then take it. They will learn that when it is down it is time to eat. It will take some time to make the transition but just be consistent and they will learn. I hope this helps!
