My dog has dry white spots on his back feet. What's causing them?

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. I am not sure what those lesions could be from just based on the photo. Dog foot pads can become cracked and dry from exposure to the elements and an develop white rough spots on their paws from running or walking on rough surfaces such as concrete, rocks or sand. I don't think I would be concerned necessarily but I do think you should take him to your vet and have them check these lesions out in person. I definitely don't think it is an emergency but try to get him seen in the next few days. In the meantime, I would do nothing so the vet can see what they look like without any intervention. These could be pyodermas (skin infections usually due to underlying allergies), contact dermatitis (if he laid on something irritating, very hot, or very cold), sun burn, ring worm, or mites. See your vet for a good exam and more accurate diagnosis as well as to get him started on the proper treatment (which can include creams, shampoos, pills, and shots, depending on what going on). Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. It is very hard to tell from the pictures, however it looks like the spots might be what we call a 'hot spot' or 'pyoderma' due to the yellow debris present. Food allergies are not present at birth, and develop. 7 months is young for the development of food allergies but it is possible. Fungal disease is possible but from the images I suspect a bacterial infection is more likely. Hot Spots present when the fur gets wet, often in the summer months, and the wet fur sits on the skin and the natural bacteria on the skin multiply in the warm moisture patch. The treatment is to shave the area and keep it clean and dry, and usually oral antibiotics are required. E-collars are important to prevent licking and re-infection of the spot. I would recommend a visit to your vet, and if the spot isn't a hot spot you can have them test for fungal/bacterial infection by doing a skin scraping. Best of luck with Bear!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The tan on the pink part of his paws in normal callus formation over time. In dogs with black paws it is less obvious. The brown discoloration in the nails usually indicates a yeast infection of the nails. If he isn't licking the feet or having any problems you may not have to do anything for the yeast. I would recommend using a shampoo such as PS Douxo Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved.
