Is human cortisone cream safe for my dog's swollen, licked paw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 10 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My 10year old male poodle schnitzel has a swollen inflamed rear left paw anterior surface. Had for approx. 2 days. Tried dabbing with salt water and beta dine, but continues to lick his paw. Other than that he does not seem too affected by it. My husband has Eleuphrat cortisone cream. Is that suitable for dogs as treatment? Thanks

Poor Sunny! That paw looks very sore. Unfortunately no, I would not used a cortisone cream on him. Cortisone creams contain steroids, which may not be suitable for certain dogs, especially senior dogs. In addition, it may be the wrong treatment for the cause of his red and sore paw. The best thing to do for him is have him seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the problems with his paw and can prescribe an appropriate treatment for him. I would take him into a vet today. Good luck!
