My dog ate melatonin sleep aid pills and is throwing up. Emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 26 lbs

My dog ate a bottle of ~25 pills of peak life somnapure. Which has melatonin, valerin, hops, lemon balm, chamomile flower, passion flower, l-theanine. He has thrown up a good amount. Do we need to be concerned and get him to an emergency vet?

Given that Boris has thrown up a good amount, it is best he is seen by an emergency vet to make sure he is ok and no other symptoms appear. Take the bottle with you so the vet can see the ingredients and treat him accordingly. Good luck!

Melatonin is, in general, not a toxic drug. however, little is known about toxicity in dogs/cats. Adverse effects reported in humans include altered sleep patterns, hypothermia, sedation, tachycardia, confusion, headache, and pruritus. the main concern would be the sedation, if it becomes too noticeable then it might be a good idea to take him to your vet in order to get him checked. if he ingested the pills less than 2 hours ago i would also recommend taking him to your vet to get an injection to induce vomiting.

My dog ingested 5mg melatonin pills. Not sure how many but pretty sure it was not more then 5. I made him throw up 3 times and did see about 3 dissolved pills. Should I take him to the vet?
Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Biggie's troubles! Although there is limited information on the overdosage and toxicity of melatonin in dogs, it is assumed that it is unlikely to cause severe issues with one accidental overdose. Melatonin can actually be prescribed for various medical conditions. In Biggie's case, 10-25mg is a little much, but again, it shouldn't really cause a problem if it just happened this one time. I would keep an eye on Biggie for a few days. Make sure he is acting like his normal self, isn't lethargic or depressed. Make sure he is eating and drinking normally and having normal stools. If he appears sick at any time, you should of course have him evaluated by his veterinarian. Another option you do have, is to call poison control. They may have some more specific information on the potential toxic effects of melatonin. As far as potential toxins go, they always have the most up to date information, and can really put your mind at ease 100%. However, I again do

My 15lb dog ate 45mg of melatonin, will he be ok?
He has had 4.5 mg/kg which is an overdose compared to routine dosages used. I could not find any data regarding dogs overdosing which were not sky high. My opinion is that he is likely to have a long sleep and a bit of nausea if anything. However if you want to be in the safer side , you can contact the local veterinary poison unit, or contact a local vet to have sickness induced if concerned .

My staffie of 4 months are my venteze pills. He is vomiting everything he eats and he is very sleepy. What should I do?
This a medication that is used in dogs already but sadly the main side effects can be vomiting. The other side effects are dose dependent so depending on how many he got into will depend on how severe this is. It is best to get him to a vet for an exam so they can check his heart rate and start medicine to help with the vomiting

My dog is 15 pounds and ate 5 mg melatonin
That is quite a large dose for a dog that small. While it may just make Max very drowsy, it is best to seek out care ASAP in the event of a large dose or if Max is acting ill. Signs to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/confusion.

my 10 pound dog ate two of my german shepherds pills what do i do. he ate metronidazole 500mg and amoxicillin 200mg
If he just ate them, you can take him into a vet now to have vomiting induced to get them out. Otherwise, you can watch him. This likely will cause GI upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. If you see that, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

My dog ate a container of relax treats . It contained 66 as he had four about 2pm. The relax treats have melatonin in them he is 80lbs
Monitor your dog for oversedation, Since he is a larger dog, I'm inclined to believe that he shouldn't have much trouble with these. If he becomes lethargic or unresponsive o seems to have trouble breathing, get him seen by a vet immediately and take the packaging with you.

My dog ate cantaloupe rind about and hour ago after eating his meal of kibble. . He has a tight, tender stomach, threw up some of the rind and is now frantically eating grass. He is 75 lbs. should I induce vomiting or take him to emergency?
If he ate a large piece of the cantaloupe rind without chewing I suppose it could cause an intestinal obstruction, but probably not quite so quickly. If his stomach seems distended, if he seems painful or if he is attempting to vomit without producing anything I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian right away. Otherwise I think you could monitor for the next couple of hours and take him in if he vomits again. I would not recommend inducing vomiting at home - hydrogen peroxide is typically what is used and it can cause significant damage to the stomach and intestines. Also, it might not be helpful to induce vomiting since he has already vomited once and not all of the rind up.

My 6 month 40 pound puppy ate some of my meds today. 5mg of lisinopril, 4mg of glimipride and 40 mg of protonix. He ate breakfast about 15 minutes prior to eating pills
It would be best to bring him into your vet or an emergency clinic so they can safely induce vomiting if possible and treat him as needed. If you are unsure if he took a toxic dose of medication, you can also contact the Pet Poison Helpline https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ (there is a fee for this service) however, due to the number of meds he ate, it would be best to just seek emergency care.
