My dog has loose stools with blood. When should I worry and see a vet?

If you are concerned I would bring a fresh stool sample to your veterinarian to check for intestinal parasites, dogs can have coccidia or giardia causing blood and mucus in the stool, and the rice like things you saw may have been tapeworm segments. It may be from stress or it could be something like intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. Given it's only a little bit of blood and as long as she is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking), you can wait to have her seen by a vet in the morning. If the amount of blood in her poop increases, she starts vomiting, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, take her into an ER vet right away. I hope this helps!

Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. You should be very concerned. Bloody runny stool could be caused by colitis, hemorrhagic gastroenterits or parasites, or a viral or bacterial infection. Parasites such as giardia will cause bloody diarrhea and can be diagnosed via a fecal sample and/or a blood test. bacterial infections will need to be treated with antibiotics. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is a serious life-threatening condition which must be ruled out, especially if your dog is lethargic and appears very ill. If your vet suspects the latter, he will want to do blood tests, possibly xrays, and will want to hospitalize your dog for monitoring, iv fluids and pain medicine as well as antibiotic treatment. So, if your dog is lethargic and appears ill, you need to take him to a vet right away. If he is lively, eats, drinks and appears otherwise normal except for the bloody diarrhea, make an appointment with your vet, mentioning it is bloody, so that you get a timely date.

The most common cause of this is gastrointestinal infection but it also may be due to scavenging, intoxication, bleeding ulcer, low platelet count and more. Please, take Jersey to your local vets for a check. He definitely will need a few days of antibiotics but prior to this, your vet will possibly recommend a blood test or ultrasound scan to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.

A small bit of bright red blood in otherwise brown poop can just be a burst vessel and isn't as concerning as poop that is completely bloody or poop that looks like raspberry jam. If Paris is still bright and eating, then feed a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice for a few days and then return to normal diet. If Paris is weak, lethargic, or the poop is very bloody, then have her to a vet right away. Best of luck with Paris!
