Why is my short-haired dog shedding so much? How to reduce it?

You will never completely eliminate shedding but you can sometimes reduce it. Sometimes it is just the dog and there isn't much that can be done. I suggest the following: 1. Daily brushing - important as it stimulates the normal oils in the skin to keep the coat healthy. 2. Omega fatty acid supplement - add this supplement to his diet to see if it helps. We have spring now and your dog likely is in the middle of a seasonal shed. This should get less as the season progresses. You can help her by combing and brushing her often, at least once a day. Do it outside or in a place where you can easily vacuum up the hair. Regular combing and brushing helps with getting rid of loose hair, itch and massages the skin, which is healthy.

Shedding fur, even seemingly large amounts, is completely normal for most dogs. If your dog has never shed like this in the past, or if she is losing so much fur she is having bald patches, then I would be concerned. Poor hair growth and cost condition can be due to poor nutrition/diet or an underlying medical condition like hypothyroidism. Excessive shedding can have a multitude of reasons: It could be seasonal shedding as we are now in full-blown autumn and Sam may be shedding his coat and replacing it with a winter coat. He could also have a thyroid condition that is making him shed excessively. This can be diagnosed or ruled out easily via a blood test. Other reasons could be bad quality food, a lack of essential fatty acids, parasites or fungal/bacterial infections. Some dogs naturally shed more than others. If you think that the shedding is caused by something other than a seasonal change or fur I suggest you take Sam to your veterinarian for an exam. I am afraid there are no pills or vitamins to prevent excessive shedding. Brushing and feeding a good brand complete dog food for small dogs is the best treatment. Regular grooming (shaving) also will hep.

Hair shedding is a normal process in dogs when the hair follicle turnover happens. THis can increase due to environemnt or hormones. To help pick up some of the shedded hair I woudl suggest purchasing a product called a Furminator brush, which can remove the shedded hair so that less of it collects on the floor. You can also give him over the counter dog fish oils from your local pet store to encourage a healthy haircoat. I would continue to bathe your pet with dog shampoo to routinely cleanse his skin. I do not see signs of a serious condition with your dog. I would be more concerned if he was getting bald spots and the skin was red and crusty. He may just be going through a normal shedding cycles, or have a mild irritation to the skin. Irritated skin is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. This sounds like normal shedding. I would not be worried unless there are bald spots where all the hair is missing. There is nothing available to stop shedding as it is a normal process.
