When to switch my 6-week-old puppy from wet to dry food?

It is important for puppies to have puppy food or a food labeled for all life stages so they can grow appropriately, so I would recommend exchanging the food. A 6 week old puppy should have all of his baby teeth coming in and should be able to eat kibble, although he may still prefer canned food.

Most dogs this age can eat hard puppy food just fine - so if he likes it and doesn't seem to have trouble chewing it, I wouldn't worry :) If he seems to have some difficulty, you can moisten it with some warm water and let it soak for a few minutes to soften before giving it to him, or feed canned food instead.

Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry puppy food only.

AT 4 weeks old it is good to try to start feeding them so they can be weaned by 6 weeks old. Each puppy is different and may take to it a different times. I would try dry puppy food mixed with water so it is soft, then feed them. They may not eat at all and play in it. If that happens, skip a day or 2 and try again. You may have to place some in their mouths to teach them. They will still nurse despite being fed so it does not have to be a lot of food as they are little and can't hold very much. The better they get and the older they are, you can decrease the amount of water added to get them used to dry puppy food.

Every puppy is different. IF they are eating well you can try to decrease the amount of water you mix with the food currently and see how they handle it. If you decrease it every day, you will get them used to eating dry. typically between 5-6 weeks they can handle dry

I would try sticking with the puppy food as best you can for now. Dogs can become very finicky and if you start offering him different things like people food now, he could become very resistant to eating dog food later in life. You can try to moisten the food with warm water before feeding it and/or a little canned food to entice him to eat it. He is also at the age where you can begin meal feeding him about three times a day. And in terms of the food -- he should be willing to eat wet food, if not dry food, at this age. So if he's not, I would highly recommend a check up with your vet to make sure everything looks ok. He may just need more time to adjust, but with such a young guy, he can get low blood sugar and dehydration very quickly, so it's important to act sooner rather than later.
