My diabetic cat is peeing blood everywhere. Should I see a vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

I have a 5 yr old male cat who is an amputee from 6 weeks old. He was diagnosed with diabetes about 4 months ago. He is on 2 units of prozinc twice a day. Tonight he started fussing and running to his cat box a lot. He started urinating everywhere and there is blood in his urine. Can this wait till morning to see our vet? The closest emergency vet is an hour away and I feel the car trip would do more harm then good. Any advice?

I'm sorry Tigger isn't feeling well at the moment! This depends. If he appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until Monday morning. If he appears lethargic, ill or distressed, or if the urine appears very bloody, then he should be seen by a vet ASAP. Keep in mind as well male cats can become blocked in their urethra, and that is a medical emergency. If you see him straining to urinate, unable to produce urine at all, produces only a little bit of urine, or is vocalizing when urinating, this can be signs he is potentially blocked and you should take him to the ER vet. Feed him wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure he drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. Good luck, I hope this helps!
