My dog takes doxycycline. Is splitting the dose still effective?

Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. I would definitely double check this with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting. I hope this helps and have a great day!

If you mean you have only been giving it once daily instead of twice daily then go ahead and give your pm dose tonight and tomorrow start your twice a day dosing as per the label (1 with breakfast and 1 with dinner). Just make sure you give with food as doxycycline can cause tummy upset. It is okay you have only missed a few days and will get back on track tomorrow. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Please, get in touch with your local vet to discuss the treatment as it sounds that the dose should be slightly adjusted.

Hello and thank you for your post! With Ehrlichiosis I typically dose at 5mg/kg every 12 hours, which equates to roughly 200mg twice daily. The 100mg dose does seem a bit low. I typically treat for about 6 weeks as well. Based on cases your vet has seen, he / she may have a reason for dosing at the 100mg twice daily. That is what I treat Ehrlichiosis with though and is effective. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. I am also available via consultation.

It is normally fine to adjust the dosing schedule by two hours or so as needed. However, I legally cannot reccomend a change in medication, without having established a client-doctor relationship with you. I will have to refer you to your vet to answer this question. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.) There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita. Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly. The prednisone dose is fine. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, doxycycline is used to treat tick borne diseases. It seems as though the doxycycline is coated in a probiotic. I can't say I've seen this form in the US but it should be fine. Have a good day!
