My rat has a swollen, limping foot with an abscess. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 2 lbs

I have a rat who has a sore/abscess on his hind foot. It's very swollen and he won't put weight on it. The abscess on his foot has been there for 2 weeks and I've been treating it but it is only today that he's limping and that it is this swollen. I'm not sure what i can put on it..i do not want to bandage it because i think he will chew through his foot to get it off, but i also don't know if i could put something like Neosporin on it because I'm not sure if that is safe for him if he licks it?

Poor Dobby! While an abscess is definitely likely, especially if there is bleeding and discharge in the area, other things such as a growth may be to blame. The abscess may be caused by an infected wound or a pressure sore. It is a pretty painful condition that can spread to the underlying bone. It would be best to have Dobby looked at by a vet who can prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medication for him as soon as possible. I would be happy to answer any other questions you may have or look at photos of Dobby's foot!
