My dog had X-rays, but she's pregnant. Will the puppies be okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bullmastiff | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 106 lbs

I recently took my 3 year old intact female bullmastiff to my Vet for exam. X-rays were done on her uterus. As it turns out, she may be pregnant. The x-rays were done between day 11 to 15 of the pregnancy. Were the embryos harmed?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! X-rays are performed using relatively low doses of radiation. Though frequent exposure can be harmful to embryos/fetuses, one or two x-rays throughout the pregnancy of a dog should not harm the puppies.
