My cat has a swollen, draining eye. Can I treat a cat eye abscess at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cats eye was swollen and had a huge bump that i seen a little pus and blood coming out of. So i took papertowl to wipe and it started ozzing pus and smelled really bad. The pus kept coming out for about 5 mins and than just blood. And now there is a hole. I put some antibiotic cream on it. After i put a warm compress on it and still was draining. I read up on it and it sounds like a absess . I cant afford a vet right now. Anything else i can at home before i definitely need to see a vet?

There is nothing you can do at home for it, your cat absolutely has to see a vet immediately. I would be concerned there is damage to his eye, and that needs to be examined so that he doesn't lose his vision. In addition, he will need antibiotics to treat the infection. The abscess needs to be drained and flushed sterilely, or else more infection can be introduced to that area. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com Please take him into a vet now.

Hi, there is not much else that can be done at home. Puske will likely need some antibiotics eye drops or ointment that is suitable for cats. So you will have to wait to see your vet tomorrow morning.
