Why does my guinea pig have a dry patch of short hair on its rump?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female

I HAVE ATTACHED PICTURES I was petting my guinea pig (shes a baby) and I felt something under her fur by her rump. When I moved her fur away there was a little patch of what looks like dry skin and stubby hairs that appear to be bitten off? There aren't any other patches like this on her body. When I looked at it she reacted but I couldn't tell if it was because I was petting her backwards. I just had to bring her in for an RTI so I really hope she doesn't have mites or something too.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I see a darker area with shorter hairs. If this is just above where Moo's tail would be, it is her grease gland. This is a gland that all guinea pigs have and it releases pheromones and oils to lubricate the hair. It is completely normal. Some guinea pigs can develop issues with their gland, requiring cleaning by their owner. You can gently clean the area with water and a mild shampoo (check your pet store for a product called Malaseb) if it gets too greasy. Definitely have the area checked out by a vet if it appears red or has any discharge. Good luck with Moo!
