My puppy had IV fluids for vomiting and diarrhea. When can he go home?

Since the diarrhea has been going on for a week and now he vomited, it's time to see your veterinarian. Diarrhea and vomiting can cause a lot of fluid and electrolyte losses leading to dehydration, weakness, and anorexia (not eating). This cycle, once started will continue unless the cause is determined and treatment is started. Diarrhea/Vomiting can be caused by many things including intestinal parasites, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs should not eat), bacterial overgrowth, infections (bacterial, viral, other), Irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, toxin exposure, drugs, problems in other organs outside of the gastrointestinal tract, among many others. Your vet can take a detailed history and do a thorough examination. They can then advise a diagnostic plan to confirm a diagnosis. Fecal/blood/urine tests and x-rays are usually a good

It sounds like your absence may have been pretty stressful for him, and its not terribly uncommon for stress to lead to some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) or gastritis (inflammation on the stomach)--so yes, his current condition may be due, at least in part, to your own hospital stay. If he is lethargic, dumpy, etc or is continuing to vomit, please take him to your vet. If he is acting like he feels ok, just not back to 100%, or his appetite is down, its reasonable to offer him a bland diet (boiled chicken/white rice) and give him another day. I'm sorry Buddy has been ill! Vomiting and diarrhea can definitely take a lot out of them, so it's a good sign that he's eating. I would expect that he should gradually feel better over the next couple of days if he's eating and drinking consistently. If at that point he's still not acting right I would have your vet recheck him. They may want check lab work to ensure nothing else is going on. Good luck!

Having said that, this can be observed in cases of gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among many other conditions. I recommend that you withhold food tonight but keep water available at all times to avoid dehydration. You may start a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice tomorrow. If clinical signs of vomiting and diarrhea continue, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Loki as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. Good luck! It could be he has a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. I recommend that you have Toffee evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He is super handsome! Even though he has had vaccines, given his age, he is not completely done with his vaccines and can still get infected with some of these diseases such as parvovirus. I advice that you have Kilo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least, they can start him on anti-diarrhea medications and something for nausea as his loss of appetite could be from nausea. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to avoid dehydration. Good luck with your pup!

Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked.
