My puppy had IV fluids for vomiting and diarrhea. When can he go home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

We have a puppy that first started being lethargic on Monday morning. We took straight to vet. He has been on IV fluids since Monday morning. Tuesday he started the diarrhea and vomit that night. Yesterday was doing a little better. Still tired but hanging on. Today the vet told us he was sitting up on his own and they were giving him real food today. He is responsive when we talked to him by moving his head around. No vomit today. Where do you think we stand? How much longer till better?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry that Beau is sick and needed to be hospitalized! It's difficult for me to say how much longer it will be until Beau is home without knowing his diagnosis. It is definitely great that he is eating, but it is likely that he is no longer vomiting because he is on anti-nausea medication. His discharge from the hospital depends on his overall condition, as well as certain factors as his blood work normalizing and hydration. Your vet will be able to give you a more accurate prognosis, but in my practice, I typically like to see that blood work is returning to normal and that the dog is fully hydrated and eating on his own before being discharged.
