Why is my dog vomiting and having diarrhea after vacation?

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. The only way to find out what is causing a possible food allergy is a) to know what you are feeding her and 2) to do an elimination diet under veterinary supervision. I would fast Merida for 24 hours and then her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

There are lots of things that could cause vomiting and diarrhea in a dog, including dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Unless she was outdoors her exhaustion is not very likely. It could be a mild case of gastritis (upset tummy) or even a mild toxin exposure. Sometimes giving small amounts of water frequently and seeing if the pet holds that down and, if so, then slow re-introduction of food is all that is needed. If they vomit the water it is more serious and a veterinarian should examine the pet. If, however, your dog continues to vomit, has bloody diarrhea, seems painful or has a distended appearance to her stomach she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

If she is still vomiting and having diarrhea after a week than your vet should run blood-work to check her kidneys and liver since she was on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. You vet could also try an anti-vomiting medication called Cerenia and an anti-diarrhea medication, like Endosorb to see if that helps. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. It sounds like your pup is having some sort of gastrointestinal distress. This could be from a virus, parasites, something she ate, or a metabolic issue. Since she has had several episodes of the vomiting and diarrhea over the past week I think I would be a good idea to have her checked out. If she is otherwise acting okay then you could withhold food for 12 hours and then try a bland diet like boiled chicken breast and white rice. You could also add a probiotic, like Fortiflora or Proviable to her diet. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then she needs to be examined and treated by a vet. Your vet can run some tests to help determine the cause and then prescribe medications to treat the vomiting and diarrhea. She may need an anti-vomiting medication, antibiotic, dewormer, etc.

If you caught him chewing on something today, my concern is that he chewed up something else at an earlier time and may have a foreign body or toxicity. Stress can certainly cause vomiting and diarrhea in some situations but in a puppy that is used to being left alone, I am more concerned about foreign body, parasites or viral disease. If he is active and alert you can feed small frequent meals of his regular dog food (just a handful at a time every couple of house) if no vomiting then continue to monitor. Hello, sorry to hear about Anya. Most GI sings of diarrhea may resolve with a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. However, other more severe causes of this such as liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel, and ingestion of foreign material may will require that your veterinarian examine Anya. If she develops persistent vomiting or diarrhea then I would recommend having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian as she may need bloodwork and x-rays to be prescribed the adequate medications. In the interim, monitor her for persistent vomiting (more than 3 episodes in 1 day), diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite and contact your veterinarian if you note any.
