Why is my 10-month-old dog throwing up bile and food but acting fine?

Throwing up can be caused by gastritis, a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast your dog for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up vomiting or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Hello, thank you for your question about Kona. Vomiting can be a sign of many underlying conditions both related to the GI tract or a systemic problem. GI problems can include recent diet changes, ingestion of foreign material, obstruction, infection, parasites, etc. Systemic problems can include liver and kidney disease, but are less likely in a puppy who is otherwise acting normal. If she is otherwise acting normal you could try offering her a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice/pasta to try and settle her stomach. If the vomiting continues or she becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea, etc I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Eve! I would with hold water and ice chips for 4 hours. If she still vomits when that is stopped or when you resume the ice chips then she should see a Vet today or first thing in the morning. Puppies of Eve's age can get dehydrated quickly if she isn't holding anything down. If she stops vomiting continue doing small amounts of water and ice chips. Try not to feed her for 8-10 hours after the last vomit. Feed a bland diet if boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals. Again if the vomiting resumes with feeding she should be seen. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, foreign body, food allergy/intolerance, new food/treat/table food. If she is otherwise acting normal, then you could withhold food (make sure she has water) for 6-8 hours and see if the vomiting resolves. If it resolves, feed her a small amount of a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) this afternoon. If the vomiting continues and/or she is acting lethargic then she should be examined and treated by a vet as soon as possible. The vet can run blood-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help determine the cause. She may need an injection of an anti-vomiting medication to help control the vomiting.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I understand your worry! I would just watch her if it was only one time and she is acting fine! If she is eating and holding that down and water that is also good news. If she continues to vomit or becomes lethargic than try to get her seen sooner. In that case, fast her for 6-8 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed 1 cup per 20lbs. I hope this helps and good luck!

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

However, in puppies, vomiting can be caused by parasites and dangerous viral infections. I recommend keeping an eye on Ciroc for continued vomiting, loss of energy/appetite, and diarrhea. Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care.
