Found a stray dog: What are the first vet steps and required shots?

If you do not have any records the Vet will determine how many DHPP vaccines she will need to protect her. It is in her best interest to receive the vaccines even if she had they before. The Rabies vaccine can be given in most state between 12-16 weeks of age. Your Vet will likely deworm her and get her on a good flea/tick and heartworm prevention. They will get him started on his vaccines and likely give him a deworming. They will talk to you about what else he may need like heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention, etc depending on what is prevalent in your area. You should book a vet appointment as soon as you can for a routine check up and vaccinations and de worming. Your vet can help you with any vaccines you need for your area but typically the first/ basic vaccine is a combined coverage for 4-5 typical and common diseases and is pretty standard. Rabies is usually recommended and given as a separate injection (during the same appointment). You will need to take your dog for a second appointment for some follow up boosters (you vet will tell you when, usually a couple weeks to a month later). Until these vaccines have been administered and a couple weeks have passed before your dog is provided with full immunity, it is best to avoid public places where other dogs frequent or contact with other dogs to prevent infection of illness.

At this appointment, the veterinarian will perform an exam, and can make recommendations for first vaccines, flea, tick and heartworm preventatives, as well as appropriate diet and socialization. Dogs require both "distemper" (DAPP) vaccines as well as rabies vaccines. These are the two core vaccines for dogs. These need to be boostered (given again) in 3-4 weeks following the first shot. There are other vaccines such as lyme and leptospirosis that can be considered depending on Venom's potential exposure. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Max is very cute! If we do not know his vaccine status, the Vet will assume he hasn't had any. It is best to be safe than sorry and it will not hurt him. He should get a Rabies vaccine and two DHPP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart. Both will be good for 1 year. Bring a stool sample and the Vet will also heartworm test him so you can start prevention. If you got him from a private home, they may be able to tell you what vet they took him to previously, so you can find out his medical history. If you got him from a shelter, they may only have the medical history and vaccination history that they gave you. If you are unable to get any medical history of vaccination, that's OK. Your vet can examine him to give him a clean bill of health, then go over with you which vaccinations are appropriate for him and give them. You will need to start the vaccine protocol over again depending on how long ago Lucky was first vaccinated. She will need a rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age, microchipping, deworming treatment, flea treatment, and heart worm treatment. Make her an appointment with a vet.
