How to help my 6-week puppy chew food and stop regurgitating?

I took in a 6 week old puppy and he is having trouble chewing his puppy food that I have mixed with milk replacer. He isn't chewing it completely and I'm afraid he is not getting enough food/ nutrients because he is regurgitating it.

I recommend making a puppy mush to help Zeus get used to puppy food. I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and puppy formula you use until he is eating the dry puppy food only. I hope this helps!

Puppies do tend to sleep a lot more than adult dogs, so this is probably normal. The soft stools could be caused by food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. I would recommend that you have Zeus dewormed in case this is caused by intestinal parasites. A common cause for vomiting in puppies is overeating or eating too fast. You may need to divide up Zeus's daily feeding amount into 4 meals that he eats every 6 hours. The bag of food will have feeding guidelines on the back or side that will tell you how much he should eat each day based on either his current weight or his expected adult weight. If you do this and Zeus is still vomiting, or if he is not interested in food, I recommend that Zeus be checked out by a vet ASAP.

I would try sticking with the puppy food as best you can for now. Dogs can become very finicky and if you start offering him different things like people food now, he could become very resistant to eating dog food later in life. You can try to moisten the food with warm water before feeding it and/or a little canned food to entice him to eat it. He is also at the age where you can begin meal feeding him about three times a day. He may be more likely to eat if you knows he has to eat during a certain period and doesn't have access to the food all the time. Congratulations on your new puppy. I hope this helps. Hi there and thanks for posting! Oh dear, this sounds stressful for everyone involved. He ma not be chewing his food due to just inhaling his food very quickly. if this is the case I would want to get Zeus a special dog food bowl that has indentations and lines in it like a circular maze. This will enable him to slow down when he eats. Another possibility may be dental or oral pain due to a tooth infection. Hi there and thank you for your question. Any of the premium dog foods such as Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, to name a few are excellent choices. Which ever food you choose I highly recommend getting the diet specific for large breed dogs. You also want to be diligent about being sure to weigh Zeus once a month and adjust the amount you are feeding accordingly. Following the suggested feeding amounts provided by the food is perfectly fine. Keeping on top of Zeus' weight and body condition now is important for the future health of his joints and bones since he is a breed predisposed to diseases like hip dysplasia. Keeping him leaner while his bones are still growing may not prevent him from having problems down the road, but it will give him a better chance. Unfortunately, genetics is the determining factor. It could be that he is constipated causing him to have a hard time going to the bathroom. You can mix in a teaspoon of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) with his puppy mush to see if that helps him. If it doesn't, he will need to see a vet. Best of luck.

We have an 8wk old chihuahua going to the vet on the 15th but we're concerned she isn't eating enough dry dog food to sustain her when she only eats a few bites. Is a small amount of meat flavored baby food ok?
I can certainly understand being concerned about your puppy not eating enough. It's really not the best for for your puppy, as it's not formulated to meet her nutritional needs. It's not something that is recommended to give to a puppy on a regular basis, usually only when the animal is sick. In addition, there may be ingredients in the baby food that is not safe for her to ingest. It could be that she isn't used to dry dog food, and you can try making a puppy mush for her to see if that helps. I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry puppy food only. If she still doesn't want to eat much, then I would have her seen before the 15th.
