I have a female winter white hamster. The fur around one of her eyes is different but I'm not sure if it's just a change in coat color or if she's balding. She's also a lot more hyper at the moment and extra timid and I'm worried it might all be connected. She isn't scratching herself from what I can tell so I don't think it's mites but I honestly don't know and I'm very worried.

The fur around the eyes can change color if there is some ocular discharge that has been leaking from the eye or if your hamster has been rubbing at her eye excessively. She may have an eye infection, and upper respiratory infection, or a scratch on the surface of her eye. I would recommend taking her into the vet to be examined so they can determine what is going on and so that the problem does not continue and spread. It may also be helpful if you could take a picture of the hamster, and show us both eyes, so we can see the difference between the two eyes and hopefully have a better understanding of what is going on. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
