My new puppy is congested, gagging, and raspy. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 months and 30 days old | 30 lbs

I just adopted my puppy from a shelter less than a week ago. Today she sounds congested, it started overnight, a raspiness when she breathes. She’s also been making gagging noises. She tries to eat everything so I’m not sure if the gagging is from that or from the congestion. She seems to be eating normally and her activity seems normal. She’s about 3 months old, a cattledog mix. Are we ok to wait a week for her next rabies vacc appointment or should we take her to the vet sooner?

Congratulations on your new puppy! It sounds like Nashville may have an upper respiratory infection, or kennel cough. You are absolutely correct in being concerned, as this condition can progress down into the lungs and cause pneumonia if not treated. I recommend having her seen by a vet sooner than next week so that she can start the appropriate course of treatment. Your vet may even elect to postpone her shots until she is better to give her immune system to fight the infection properly.
