My kitten has dark crust on one nostril. Is it litter or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 25 days old | 2.5 lbs

My 3 month of kitten has started having a little crust show up on one nostril. It's dark in color so I thought maybe it was from her walnut litter. She was on doxy for a little upper respiratory infection (she was sneezing a lot but no discharge) when I first adopted her from the shelter. It is happening on the same nostril each time I find it. Could it be the litter or maybe another infection?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it can be crust from having a bit of nasal discharge. Sometimes cats can have a mild nasal discharge from perhaps allergies which can then when it dries up it can result in mild crusting. While this can be an infection, if she is otherwise doing well, you can continue to monitor her for now. If this does not improve in the near future, have her examined by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck and have a good day!
