Black tarry stool indicates bleeding in the intestinal tract and this can be serious. Feed her boiled white breast chicken and white rice. Get her into the veterinarian ASAP for medications to protect her intestinal tract. She also needs bloodwork to check for any excessive blood loss. I hope Spot feels better!

A solid black poo can occur when your dog eats raw red meat, or has a gastric bleed (often caused by ulcers) or an intestinal bleed. If your dog has not eaten any raw or bloody meat within the past two days, and of the poo looks very tarry then there may be a gastrointestinal problem that should be investigated by a veterinarian. Your vet may want to do blood tests as well as an x-ray.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexie. Yes, this is worrisome. Black tarry stool can indicate bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. The blood gets digested and comes out very dark in the stool. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. I hope this information helps!

It is described as tarry consistency, very dark brownish black with a more metallic type odor. This can be a serious medical problem resulting from drugs, stomach ulcers, or cancer. I recommend your veterinarian examine a stool sample and check the blood for anemia which will be a sign of internal bleeding.
