Can I give my dog Costco fish oil? Is it safe? What about vitamin E?

Can I give my dog fish oil from Costco? The dog supplements are much more costly. Will it be ok to give one softgel daily? Do I need to supplement vitamin E with fish oil?

It's fine to give dogs the human grade fish oil. Chloe can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. These pills are a little more than that, but it will be fine. She won't need vitamin E supplementation also. I hope this helps!

Yes, that is fine to give once a day. I recommend a maximum of 750 mg of fish oil per 10 lbs of body weight in a dog. That brand if fine to give. I highly recommend using an omega 3 supplement like this to reduce joint pain and inflammation, and it will help the skin and coat also. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Chloe.

Is it necessary to supplement with small amounts of vitamin E when giving fish oil daily? Please explain, thanks!
As long as you are feeding a formulated dog food, this is not necessary. Supplementing vitamin E, and/or fish oils may help the coat look shinier and can be helpful in certain medical conditions. Otherwise the dog food should have adequate amounts in it. Hello again! If you are already giving a joint supplement and fish oil, do not give Chloe this additional supplement. Too much fish oil isn't good for her. I'd give the joint tablet and fish oil only. Cosequin is important for her to have for her joint health, and Nordic naturals fish oil is a good brand.

You can give human fish oil. Lily Sue can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. I'm not sure what she weighs, but she could probably have one or two tablets a day. Start with one to see how she goes. I would also consider getting pain medication from her vet. I hope this helps.

You are welcome! It is preferable that you give the 1,000mg containing 300mg of EPA and DHA per 30 pounds, but you can give a dose range between 20-55mg combined EPA and DHA per pound of body weight. With the Trader Joe's supplement, that's about 29mg per pound of body weight of the combined EPA and DHA so it's within the safe dose range. I'm sorry I wasn't clearer before, and I hope this clears up any confusion :-)

I love Nordic Naturals and I always recommend using a veterinary product when available. They do tests to make sure you are giving the right amount for your dogs size. If Chloe's food does have a ration of 6:1 omega 6's and 3's, then she doesn't need a fish oil supplement. Too much fish oil can have detrimental effects on the health of a dog including interfering with wound healing. The only pill I would recommend giving Chloe would be the joint pill :-)

Human fish oil products are safe for dogs. They are a good source of omega 3 which I use to reduce joint inflammation from arthritis. As Chacha is so small the maximum dose for her is 500 mg Fish oil daily. I usually start with a lower dose to make sure she doesn't get diarrhea and then I gradually increase it. You can split the dose also if you feed twice daily. Some people use liquid, others cut open the capsules and put the oil directly on the food. Hello! If you are giving Chloe the fish oil, you don't need to give the vitamin E as well. Fish oil commonly contains vitamin E already to prevent spoilage. I wish there was any scientific evidence that heart supplements work! There is absolutely zero evidence unfortunately.
