My dog's spay incision has a broken stitch. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed

My dog got spayed one week ago, I was inspecting her wound tonight and realized one stitch is broken. Is this something to be alarmed about? The vet doesn't open until 8am.

It appears that it's just the skin suture that's missing, so it's not too alarming. However, the incision site appears rather inflamed, which is likely why the incisions are coming out. This could also indicate that the incision site is infected. If you are able to take her to the vet in the morning, then that would be best. The vet will likely need to clean and maybe stitch the wound again, so I would call the vet who did the surgery in the morning and ask if you can drop her off for the day. For now, you don't need to do anything for this wound. Just check on it occasionally and note if there are any changes. If the incision site starts to swell more, or you notice the wound open more, then this would be an emergency and I'd recommend you take her to the emergency vet for this. I hope that helps and Harley gets better soon.
