My mom made the mistake of feeding my 5 month old puppy a cheese puff. Since then, she has had liquid diarrhea for 3 days straight. It just won’t stop, and she keeps having accidents everywhere. How can I stop it from happening?

As long as Kylie is behaving normally otherwise, you can try managing the diarrhea at home. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte in small amounts. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount of food. Once the stool is normal, transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve or if Kylie develops vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain then have her examined by your veterinarian. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: cottage cheese, boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cooked/drained ground beef or cooked/drained ground turkey. Mix the ingredients in a 1:1 ratio.

Poor pup! This diarrhea can be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, intestinal parasites, or a sudden change in diet among other causes. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps before having to take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Poor Theo! At this point since the home remedies haven’t worked, it’s time to see the vet. It could be he has something like intestinal worms causing his diarrhea, and that requires a deworming treatment. Please take him into the vet in the morning. Best of luck.
