My Maine Coon bites when brushed. How to manage his matted fur?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 17 lbs

How can I manage my Maine coons fur? He never lets me brush him and he has a small spot that is tangled. Whenever I try he bites and gets upset. I try to be as gentle as I can and reward him but it’s very difficult. I don’t want him to be all matted up-it must hurt! Any and all tips and products I can use are greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

If he has mats then the mats probably need to be clipped out with some clippers. You could take him to a groomer for clipping. After the mats are gone then you should try to regularly brush him. If he won't let you brush him then he may need regular grooming.
