Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 64 lbs
Hi, I've got a question regarding pregnancy in dogs and the accuracy of sonograms. My Golden Retriever/German Shepherd cross is two years old and recently had her third heat, during which she accidentally got tied with a male for approximately ten minutes. I took her for an ultra on the 30th day, and it was negative. I've been told large, active dogs can carry puppies high up, close to the ribs. And that ultrasound accuracy depends on ovulation. All the physical signs are there and I.m worried.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! At 30 days post mating and if Mena is carrying a small litter, an ultrasound may have missed puppies. Nothing is every 100% accurate. You have 2 options 1) repeat the ultrasound 2 weeks later or wait until around day 50 and take an X-ray looking for the mineralized bones of the puppies. Dogs that are not pregnant can still exhibit signs of pregnancy of they are experiencing a false pregnancy. This is when hormonal changes with in the body mimic pregnancy. Dogs can even produce milk and have enlarged mammary glands. They can nest and even show signs of stage 1 labor. It takes over 2 months for false pregnancy signs to go away. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1896 I hope this helps and good luck!
