My adopted dog has diarrhea and won't eat. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I adopted a Pom on 11/4 from TX & came back home to Lafayette, LA, on 11/5. He’s had no appetite for dry food & has diarrhea. Stools had some blood & mucus, but got better after I fasted him, did the bland diet, & fed him some pumpkin & yogurt. It’s 11/7 now, & stools aren’t straight liquid, but still VERY soft (& orange, but I think that’s the pumpkin). I know it’s from stress & the 6 hr car ride, but I’m worried. It’s been 2-3 days. He’s not lethargic, but idk what’s normal bc I just got him.

It sounds like you have done all the right things at home, and that it's time for some medical intervention. Stress, intestinal parasites, and food changes can all cause diarrhea in an otherwise healthy dog. It's also possible he has something more serious going on. I recommend a vet visit today to start treatment. They may want to do some test if he's very ill, or may want to start medications and see how he responds.
