Why is my dog shaking in his sleep? Is it normal or a seizure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 34 lbs

My dog is shaking in his sleep. It is hard to describe so We took a video but it is not able to post. It is visible that the muscles In his face are moving and his body does short little shaking. It isn’t a seizure, but it can be felt by me because he is sitting on me.. it starts and stops. Is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If it isn't every time he sleeps then it is likely normal "dreaming" for a dog asleep. He should be normal when awake: eating, drinking, no vomit, diarrhea or behavioral changes. If he isn't normal when awake I recommend taking him to your Vet for an evaluation and blood work. I hope this helps and I wish you and Rolo the best!
