Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered
My dog, an older 15lb "hybrid" chihuahua, has a lump on the left side of his neck under the skin... it seems like a swollen gland adjacent to his windpipe and swallowing "mechanism" tissue... he is breathing well; there is no throat obstruction; he is eating well with no issues... and barks normal and has good energy. It doesn't bother him at all when I rub the swollen area with the lump... he doesn't indicate that it bothers him. My vet is now closed for the day. What is this likely?

This is most likely a swollen lymph node. Usually when they enlarge it’s a sign of infection somewhere close by. Max may have a tooth infection or gum disease causing the lymph node enlargement. This can also be a sign of cancer so I would bring him in soon for an exam. If it looks like the problem is with his teeth or gums they will recommend a dental cleaning and antibiotics. If his teeth are fine they will aspirate cells from the lump to determine if it’s caused by an infection or if there is a tumor. Once they have a diagnosis then can give Max the appropriate treatment. He certainly looks healthy so I’m not overly concerned about this, but please do have it examined by your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Max.
