I have a 2 pound 14 week old chiahuha puppy. She got her first 5 in 1 vaccine at 12 weeks. When should she get a followup vaccine?

We usually start puppy vaccines at 6-8 weeks of age, and repeat them every 3-4 weeks until after they are 16 weeks of age. Isabella needs her next distemper/parvo combo shot at 15-16 weeks of age. Rabies vaccination is also required by law, usually between 12-14 weeks of age.

In general, a dog's maternal antibodies (protective antibodies from their mom) wear off sometime around 12-16 weeks of age. For this reason, we typically recommend boostering the DAPP (distemper-adenovirus-parvovirus-parainfluenza) vaccine every 3-4 weeks from 6 weeks of age until at least 16 weeks of age. Rabies vaccines can usually be given around 12-16 weeks of age, but this varies by state. There are other optional vaccines available for leptospirosis, lyme disease, canine influenza, and bordetella (kennel cough) that can also be given depending upon an individual dog's lifestyle. It is possible that your vet has spread out Prince's optional vaccines over a longer duration of time rather than giving multiple vaccines at one time. I would recommend giving an additional DAPP vaccine 3-4 weeks (17-18 weeks of age) from now to assure that he develops his own protective antibodies. If you have concerns about giving optional vaccines and have no plans for Prince to travel, go to parks, groomers, kennels, dog parks or swim, the other vaccines may not be necessary. Talk to your vet about their recommendations for Prince's vaccines based upon his lifestyle. I hope this helps!

Gypsy is not fully protected until her immune system matures which happens at 16 weeks of age. You did not say when her last vaccine was. Because she is not yet 16 weeks old, she still needs a final set done at 16 weeks old. In generally puppies get vaccines at 8-9 weeks old, 12 weeks old and then the final set at 16 weeks old. You must have at least two rounds of vaccines vaccines done 2-4 weeks apart. I hope this helps!
