Why is my dog itchy, sneezing, and flaky? Is it allergies or yeast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years old

Dog itchy a little more than normal. Does NOT interfere with daily activities like playing/sleeping/eating. Mainly itches the ears and armpits with paw licking. Is on Frontline plus for fleas and had fleas back in August but was taken care of as well as home. Went to vet in Sept and was told dry skin and no sign of fleas and given medicated shampoo. Provides temp relief. Sneezing a lot esp after being outside. Has flaky skin on belly. Could it be allergies or yeast? No redness/scabs/flea bites.

Poor Trisha! Itching is always so uncomfortable! Due to your location and time of year, there could always be a concern for allergies. Frontline plus is good and I always recommend keeping on flea prevention all year round to eliminate the possibility of fleas, especially in a dog that itches a lot. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about the possibility of allergies in Trisha. There are great new options from daily medication to injections monthly that can help Trisha get some relief. I hope she is feeling much better soon! It could absolutely be allergies. However when I see flaking if the elbows then I worry about the possibility of mites as well. I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian. They may want to do a skin scrape to look for mites. You can also discuss treatments for allergies at that time. Apoquel and Cytopoint are both relatively new allergy medications that make a huge improvement in most patients. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
