Senior dog incontinence: What foods or supplements can really help?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 70 lbs

We have a senior boxer, she is about 9 years old now. She is loosing bladder control, not just dribbles but walking and full on peeing like she doesn't even notice it. We are getting her diapers but are there any supplements or foods that can help with this?

It could be that Shiloh is suffering for spay incontinence. This is due to weakening of the muscles of the urethra, and it can be treated medically. IT could also be that she has a UTI or bladder stones. I would have her seen by a vet for this behavior. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can prescribe medication to treat it. Your dog could be suffering from a UTI, polyps or a bladder stones or a tumor. This could also be old-age related or due to lack of estrogen. It is necessary to rule out as many causes in order to find the correct treatment that works. You will need to take your girl to your veterinarian for a thorough exam, and a urinalysis. UTI's are usually treated with antibiotics, bladder stones would likely need to be removed if on the larger side, and a tumor may need special treatment or surgery. If she suffers from estrogen-dependent incontinence there are several medications that work very well in controlling this. Please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Hi! My older basset hound, Missy, is having incontinence issues. Are there any medications or supplements that would help with this?
Hi there! Sorry to hear Missy is having accidents. There certainly are medications to help with this. Usually older spayed female dogs are the ones who have these issues-due to estrogen dependent urinary incontinence. Your veterinarian will have to see Missy for an exam and probably blood work to make sure the medications are safe for her. Incuran and Proin are two frequently prescribed medications for these issues and it is usually by preference of the doctor which one is prescribed. Usually they work quite well, and most dogs take them easily with a small snack. I hope this helps!

Unlikely. Incontinence is generally related to a lack or hormones or a dysfunction of the nerves. These pups are prone ti bladder infections so get her examined within the new few days. Best of luck.

My dog recently started experiencing urinary incontinence. I am wondering if this is due to age (12 years) or may be an issue that will require a veterinarian visit?
This could actually be due to a medical illness. It may be that Spike has a UTI or bladder stones causing his incontinence. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat him. Best of luck.

Miss BB is approximately 15 years and some problem with liver her vet has her on galliprant 60 mg #24818 and cosequin ds for heap problem, she now pees if I don't put her out fast, could this be meds doing it?
Hello and thank you for your post! I have used both of these drugs that she is currently taking and have never seen inappropriate urination as a side effect if she is having trouble holding her urine this could be due to age. As dog's age so does their cognition. Many older dogs have a hard time holding their urine and we'll start to show signs of urinary incontinence due to age. I would recommend getting her urine tested for signs of a urinary tract infection to make sure she does not need a course of oral antibiotics. If she is not dealing with a urinary tract infection, then I would speak to your vet about supplements or medications that can improve cognition. I hope this helps! my dog is nearly 13 years old and cant seem to hold her wee for long periods now also it smells quite strong
I would have Holly evaluated by a veterinarian. These symptoms could be caused by a urinary tract infection and if that is the case she would need antibiotics to feel better. Another less likely but possible cause could be stones in her bladder. If she is leaking urine where she sleeps and is unaware it is occurring rather than having accidents in the house or going frequently outside she could have urinary incontinence. This is where the muscles that usually hold urine in the bladder get weaker causing dogs to involuntarily leak urine when they are relaxed. A veterinarian will be able to help sort out what is going on and get Holly on any medication necessary to get her feeling better.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kennedy. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will be examined and her urine will be tested. This will look for signs of an infection, kidney disease or bladder stones. Blood work may be recommended as well. If the testing is normal, then she likely has a condition known as hormone responsive incontinence. This is common in middle aged spayed female dogs. What a cutie she is! If she is doing this in her sleep the the most common cause would be a weakness of the sphincter that stops the bladder from emptying. This is a common issue in spayed female dogs and can often be treated with medication. I would make an appointment for your vet to examine her and make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection, and to discuss if they think she would benefit from a medication trial for sphincter mechanism incontinence aka spay incontinence. You may want to discuss starting a medication to strengthen the bladder sphincter. Proin and Incurin are two such products. Also make sure she does not have a bladder infection or bladder stones (ask about a urine culture and x-ray) because these could also cause the symptoms. Otherwise your veterinarian is correct that general good hygiene is the best thing you can do aside from stopping the leakage. A diaper may help as well but be aware you will need to change it frequently or else she will also get a rash. medicated wipes and shampoo can also help when a rash starts to develop. The medications to treat this issue are vet only medications here in the U.S. I have no idea if these medications are available where you live. You need to speak to a veterinarian there to see what your options are. Here we use phenylpropanolamine (PPA) or diethylstilbestrol (DES). There are not benign medications and dogs need to monitored closely while taking them. The first step is to rule out a urinary infection by having a urine test done.
