My dog's ear smells and looks bad. Is it an infection or just dirt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 29 days old | 35 lbs

Does dune's ear look abnormal? About a week ago he was groomed and they cleaned his ears, which looked good. Then, today, I noticed that his left ear smells bad, so I looked inside and it doesn't look great. Is it just dirt or could it be some type of infection? He is currently on metronidazole full-time for IBD, if that makes any difference.

It looks as though there may be an infection brewing in the ear. I would recommend an examination with your veterinarian to confirm infection and and rule out mites or foreign objects in the ear. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
