Why won't my active dog eat his meals but still eats treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has been eating in a weirdly lately. Yesterday he had 3 meals: 7am, 4pm and 10pm (his usual times) which consisted of chicken, rice, beef mince mixed with his kibble[lamb and rice] and bit of cheese but today he barely any food. He had one meal at 7am but barely ate and fed him just a few hours ago around 11-12am which wasn’t much. he’s still hyper and active and eats his treats but he won’t eat his actual meal. Any advice?

Hi there! There can be many reasons for not eating much. It is hard to say what the cause is without examining him first, but it could be caused by dental disease or another medical cause. I would say if he isn't wanting to eat much tomorrow, then I would take him into his nearest veterinary clinic for an exam soon. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
