Dog has hives and swelling after eating. Is it an allergic reaction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 65 lbs

My Dog ate a twig from a fragrance broom & then ate something from outside, a few hours later she woke up with her lip swollen & hives on her arms & chest. Moments later her lip went down slightly & her eyes & vagina began swelling. She hasn’t had any trouble breathing or acting weird. At 11:39p I gave her food & 50mg of benadryl, I also gave her a cool bath to help the swelling. She is a 1 year old red/blue nose Pitbull, weights 60-63 pounds

You did everything correctly!!! Now, just continue to monitor her. Make sure the swelling starts to subside and that no other issues develop. You can repeat the Benadryl 4-6 hours after you gave it if she still has some swelling. It may make her drowsy. Good work !!!
