My dog ate Advil. Is one 200mg ibuprofen pill harmful for my dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 65 lbs

My 60 pound pit bull dog ate some advil 200mg around 5:30 pm today. Since than we fed him and gave him a lot of water he threw up but no blood or anything in it. Took him for a long walk and he pooped twice nothing in that either. Just seeing if you can offer some advice.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Big only ate 1 Advil, then that dose will not do any harm. But if he ate 2, 3 or more, then Big may have some issues with stomach irritation. You might want to talk to your vet about a stomach protectant tomorrow. Ulcerations in the stomach lining can be pretty serious. See how he is tomorrow & please give your vet a call in the morning.

I am sorry to hear about Big. You don't mention if Big just ingested one tablet of 200mg Advil or if she ingested multiple advil tablets. At lower doses, advil (active ingredient ibuprofen) can cause GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, anorexia, abdominal pain). At higher doses (over 175 mg per kg of body weight) we can see more dangerous side effects that require aggressive care, including bleeding GI ulcers and kidney damage and at even higher doses neurological effects. If you are unsure of how many tablets Big has ingested, I would recommend taking her to the nearest emergency clinic or calling the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. If Big has ingested only 1 tablet, then this is a lower dose of ibuprofen (around 8mg per kg) and is not likely to cause long term consequences. If his vomiting has stopped and you know he just ingested 1 tablet, I would just observe him over the next 24 hours for changes in energy level and additional signs of stomach upset, and if these occur see his regular vet.
