Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. You need to take Demi into the vet who can prescribe Meloxicam to him and can give him the correct dose.

That does seem quite high. In my drug handbook, the reported dose is 0.1mg/kg. For a 120 pound dog, this is 5mg. I would ask your vet to re-calculate the dose or choose a different NSAID all together. Personally, I don't like using meloxicam in large breed dogs and I use carprofen, deracoxib, or firocoxib.

No, I would not give this to Dixie. It may be the incorrect dose for her, and you can accidentally do harm to her by giving her it. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday. Until then, I would rest her and keep her as quiet as possible. You can give her glucosamine and chondrotin sulfate supplements which help with joint problems such as arthritis.

Hi there. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Cocoa is having this issue. She sure is adorable! Unfortunately, we cannot recommend that you give any over the counter medications to Cocoa. We are not allowed to do that by law since we haven't examined her in-person. Dogs are actually very sensitive to over the counter medications and if she has any conditions underlying (like kidney disease for example) those medications can make it worse. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. It is not common for small breed dogs to have hip problems so it would be best to get her examined to figure out what is causing the problem. Then you can discuss the options for treatment with your vet. As long as the smaller dog doesn't have any pre-existing liver or kidney issues, its unlikely that this will be a problem. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, or lethargy; if you notice any of these symptoms, take him to the vet for an exam and bloodwork. Again, though, based on what you are describing, as long as Bean is otherwise healthy, I think its extremely unlikely that this will cause any issues. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Hi! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Katie just ingested a very high dose of meloxicam. The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow. Meloxicam can be used in cats but with caution. Giving the wrong dose of meloxicam can be very dangerous for cats. The low dose (0.5 mg/ml) formula can be dosed with the provided syringe. In the cat this product is given either as a single one time injection in association with surgery (its FDA approved use) or long term 2-3 times per week (its non-U.S. dose). Long term use of this product in cats is "off label" in the U.S. In my opinion, there is a specific NSAID made for cats called Onsior that would be safer to give.

Metacam is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug which is a powerful pain killer. Gabapentin is also a very good pain killer, but it takes time for it to work and it sedates the dog initially. I suggest you call your vet tomorrow and ask him which one he recommends this time, as depending on the type of pain one or the other can be better.
