My dog has Purina chicken allergy. What food should I switch to?

What type of food should I switch to if my dog is experiencing allergies to Purina pro plan chicken and rice formula?

I would consider a food that has an alternative source of protein from chicken since protein is the most common type of food allergy in dogs. Purina ProPlan has a lamb and rice dog food, so I recommend trying that food. I hope this helps!

Hi, I would either try to reintroduce Purina food gradually and if not tolerating it, source another hypoallergenic diet such as Hill’s Z/D for example. Have a look to see if wet food is available in the Purina range, there definitely is in the Hill’s one. If itchiness is severe and distressing, I would recommend to see your vet so he can dispense some medications to help promptly. Hope this helps and that things settle again soon.

I have read recently that grain free dog food containing peas, potatoes and lentils can cause a heart condition in dogs (DCM). My dog is allergic to chicken and grain. what should I feed him in light of this recent information?
First of all this information regarding peas, potatoes and lentils is not true whatsoever. you can feed him any brand of food that is grain free and chicken free, many companies have at least one product that will fit this description- Orijen for example have a food called "six fish", it's grain free and there is no chicken in it either.

No, do not give your dog milk. Dairy is never recommended to give to dogs because it causes GI upset. There are kibble diets that are formulated with proteins that aren't made from chicken, such as rabbit, lamb, duck, and beef. Eukcanuba has a lamb and rice kibble, that may be a good option for your dog. I hope this helps!

I'm confused I thought by switching proteins that you would prevent food allergies? Can someone explain to me how staying on the same food will prevent food allergies?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The most common food protein allergen is chicken. I tell clients they can try 2 different over the counter novel protein diets for 2-3 months each before trying a prescription hydrolyzed diet. A novel protein diet means the protein or meat is one that the dog or cat has never eaten before. Only pick one at a time. Examples are Venison, duck, fish, rabbit with green pea, sweet potato, etc. The animals need to eat this diet exclusively, meaning no table scraps, treats or bones, rawhides, greenies or pig ears. The only treats you can give the pet are ones that contain the new protein. You need to give the diet 2-3 months before trying a different protein. There are prescription novel protein diets as well. Hydrolyzed diets are prescription only. The protein is broken down to a very small protein size that isn't recognized as as an allergen by the immune system. I have a 13 lb male Teddy Bear (Bichon/Shih Tzu). He has had crystals in his bladder and has been on Royal Canin Urinary SO for several years. Unfortunately it has chicken which makes him itch. Is there a different solution to avoid this issue?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Fortunately, there is an option for Bizu that is a newer poduct from Royal Canin, which is a multifunction pet food. They have a combination diet that is urinary (like he is on) and hydrolyzed protein, which is specifically for allergies. Hydrolyzed diets may use chicken and other proteins in them, but the protein sources are broken down so small that the body doesn't recognize them and they don't cause the itchiness we see with food allergies. This may be a great option for him!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I would just transition to the new food that is not chicken based right away. There is no need to transition slowly to prevent vomiting since he already vomits on the original diet. I would start a new diet with a different meat protein such as salmon, venison, rabbit, etc. I hope this helps! The best type of food for a dog with food allergies would be a prescription hypoallergenic diet such as Purina HA or Hills z/d - these are diets that are specially formulated to avoid any proteins that can cause an allergic response, and can be ordered online with a prescription from your veterinarian. If you need an over-the-counter option, some dogs with food allergies do well on Natural Balance limited ingredient diets - these don't work as consistently as prescription diets do, but are often less expensive so can be a reasonable alternative option if needed due to cost.

Hi there. For dogs with food allergies, I always recommend feeding a prescription hypoallergenic diet such as Hills z/d or Purina HA if possible. With over-the-counter diets, cross contamination with other ingredients is common - so any of these foods may contain small amounts of chicken, even if this isn't listed as an ingredient. So depending on how sensitive Walker is, he could potentially react to almost any OTC food. A prescription hypoallergenic diet eliminates this risk, so you can be sure that he won't have a reaction :)

Just out of curiosity how common is it for a dog to be allergic to chicken? So many dog foods are now claiming not to have chicken. Isn't chicken good for dogs since it's leaner?
I don't find many dogs that are allergic to chicken. Dogs often develop food allergies from switching to foods with different proteins all the time, like from beef to chicken to lamb to fish. I like to stick with one brand of food and one protein like chicken and feed that their whole life. You may think this is boring but it will prevent food allergies, upset stomachs and diarrhea from changing foods. Yes, chicken is lean and good for dogs. It's what I feed mine. I feed Purina and go from puppy to adult to weight management, if needed, to senior. Now my elderly dog get Brite Mind to help with mental acuity. If a cat has suspected chicken allergies, should other poultry be avoided as well? How about hydrolyzed chicken: Is it true that the body doesn't recognize the protein source or is it safer to just avoid this too? Thanks in advance!
In most animals with food allergies hydrolyzed protein sources are ok. However, if it is possible I usually recommend switching to a novel protein source instead of the hydrolyzed diet. This way you can ensure there is no reaction from the food. Additionally I would avoid other poultry proteins as well. Some animals that are allergic to chicken also have reactions to foods with duck as the primary protein.
