Why is my 9-month-old cat throwing up dry food and subdued?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

We've recently taken on a cat, approx 9mo. He vomited x3 yesterday and x1 so far today. Several hours after eating. Some visible bits of dry food in vomit. He's underweight. He had a traumatic day before he came to us so I'm not keen to inflict stress by taking him to a vet. After being happy and playful after the first day of vomiting he has been subdued since today's. Having a mix of wet pouches and dry food.

The vomiting could be caused by stress, diet change, infection, parasite, etc. You could take a fecal sample to a vet for testing to make sure he doesn't have a parasite. You could also feed him a bland gastrointestinal or sensitive stomach diet and see if that helps. Otherwise, he needs to be examined and treated by a vet. He may need an anti-nausea medications and a gastrointestinal protectant to help. Hope he feels better soon!
