My dog has recurring ear and skin issues, worse in summer. Help!

Pet's info: Dog | Bullmastiff | Male | neutered | 120 lbs

Hi my bullmastiff Chopper has had reoccurring ear infections and skin infections over the last year. I feed him a limited ingredient diet dog food sweet potato and venison formula. He gets nothing other than this diet. His symptoms appear to get worse over the summer and fall. These symptoms include red sores on his belly runny eyes and ear infections. I gave him Benadryl twice a day and this appears to help a little. What other treatments could I consider?

Poor Chopper! If his symptoms are getting worse over the summer and fall, he may be suffering from environmental allergies. He may benefit from medications from the vet such as Apoquel or steroids. I would make an appointment with your vet for him to discuss using medication to treat his symptoms if he does suffer from environmental allergies. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you very much for your inquiry. Because you are experiencing seasonal type of itching, this helps to narrow down our possible list of diagnoses. The possible causes of your itching are: flea allergy dermatitis, environmental allergies, and contact dermatitis. The first thing that I would absolutely recommend is that you have your dogs on a prescription veterinary flea preventative every single month including the winter months. Flea bite dermatitis can be worse in the summer if use dart flea preventative’s then and skip the rest of the year. Next, take a wet wash cloth and wipe down both of your dogs every morning and every night from head to tail to feet just to remove possible allergens that may have collected on them that would cause the itching. Lastly, if those two things do not work, then you are veterinarian will be able to give an anti-itch injection that should last for the duration of the summer and make your dogs feel a lot better. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to control a pets allergies with access to medications through your vet. If you are looking for an affordable and effective treatment, then ask your vet about a product called Apoquel. It has grown immensely in its popularity among pet owners because of its reasonable pricing and effectiveness in controlling canine allergic dermatitis. Also I know you probably are already aware, but finding out what the allergen is and either avoiding it (when possible) or getting skin allergy testing and subsequent allergy shots are often needed to truly control a pets allergic condition. However as I mentioned earlier, Apoquel acts to stop the itch in pets with allergies as long as the pet is on the medication. Another thing you can do is to give Ahi daily fish oils (pet formulated from your local pet store), which provides some natural anti-inflammatory properties. I am sorry to hear about Diesel! Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with. We can have allergies to ingredients in food (it is usually a protein source and not a grain allergy), or allergies to things in the environment like pollen, grass, dust, etc. If he isn't already on a fatty acid supplement, I would consider starting one (such as Welactin) as they can have anti-inflammatory effects in the body and reduce itching in some dogs if given daily. With mild allergy cases, sometimes antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, cetirizine, or hydroxyzine are used and are effective. You should discuss with your vet if they feel any of these are appropriate for Diesel. In severe cases we need stronger immune-modulating drugs such as Apoquel or Atopica (unfortunately these are also more expensive but can make a dramatic difference for some dogs). Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). I'm sorry to hear Tucker is having skin issues. Lesions like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites, allergies, an infection (bacterial or fungal), or an underlying medical issue. If there is a seasonality that you are noticing, it could be a reaction to something in the environment at that time. I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian to try to determine the underlying cause for his skin issues, and start any treatment (anti-itch medications, etc.) that he may need to help resolve or control it. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. It is possible that allergies are to blame for her ongoing skin disease especially if her problems are somewhat seasonal. There are two great new allergy medications used to control itching and licking. They are both very effective. Typically if the itching can be controlled and medication such as an antibiotic can be used to treat any secondary infection, the skin will heal. This will take away the odor. The two medications I used most commonly for environmental allergies are Apoquel and Cytopoint. It is important to rule out other allergies such as fleas and diet. She may need a prescription diet trial. I hope this information helps!

It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too. Once the infection has resolved a long term allergy medication

There could be a few different things going on. I would first have a vet skin scrape him to make sure there are no mites. I would also recommend Simparica, Nexguard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention. The reason being is they can also be used to help treat mites if that is the cause. You have described what could very well be seasonal allergies called Atopy in dogs since you talk about a seasonal pattern. We are in a peak time for late summer allergies in humans and dogs who are allergic to weed pollens which are high at this time of year. Of course other inhaled allergies could be present and cross reactivity exists between some allergens. Each year or allergy season can be worse than the last if the pet becomes allergic to more things. Dogs can also be allergic to flea bites called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) and a smaller group of allergic dogs can have food allergies. What you are describing sounds like an inflammation/infection of the skin due to self trauma caused by Jack licking, scratching, chewing, etc those areas. It looks like he has a hot spot. The best thing would be to have him examined by a vet for treatment. He probably needs an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help get his allergies under control. You can also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps. There is a new allergy medication called Apoquel that you could ask your vet about and see if that helps, too.
