Havanese throwing up? What's the best dog food for sensitive stomachs?

I have a 3 year old havanese and right now he eats whole earth farms but he seems to throw it up after a while and some days he wont even touch it. What is the best dog food to go with?

The brands that I personally recommend including Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I recommend these brands because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff who make sure the food is healthy and formulated to meet an animal's nutritional needs. If you do decide to switch Bear's food, make sure you do the switch slowly to avoid GI upset. I hope this helps!

As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!

I'm sorry to hear that Sophie is intolerant to the foods you are trying. This may be a sign of a chronic underlying problem with her stomach like IBD, food allergies, or pancreatitis. You can try feeding a formulation of a bland diet like Hill's I/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal. You can also try a hypoallergenic diet or a novel protein diet. If the vomiting persists, she should be examined by a veterinarian to determine what the underlying problem may be.

You can try several other brands of food that are good for dogs with food sensitivity, such as Fromm, Merrick limited ingredient, or Victor to name a few. There are also prescription brands that are designed for pets with sensitive stomach, such as Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal that you can discuss with your vet if interested. If she has been vomiting repeatedly the first step is to get her in to see your vet. She may have a medical condition, infection, or foreign body causing her to vomit. If she is cleared medically, there are a number of diets that are formulated for sensitive stomachs. My personal favorite brands of dog food are Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin and both have multiple formulas in both dry and canned.

I would consider ruling out other issues such as a functional problem of the esophagus either through your vet or on referral to a specialist. Some dogs can have problems with moving the food down into the stomach, and it could be that the kibble has a hard time traveling (which is why lunch meat doesn't), or there is another underlying issue. A food trial to rule out any food allergies may be another step you can take as well. Most dogs are allergic to certain proteins in foods, rather than grains (though they can be allergic to almost anything just like people), so working on a food trial with your vet to see if there is something that triggers the vomiting episodes may be helpful. If you've kept a record of things he has eaten in the past, you can also compare ingredients and see if there is something common in them that may be missed. Switching from kibble to a wet food diet or mixing in water to soften his kibble may be another solution to see if he is able to keep that down long

You can try the duck or fish to see if Sadie likes that better, but do the food switch slowly over the course of two weeks to prevent further GI upset. Royal Canin has a sensitivity controlled food (Royal Canin Sensitivity Control) that may work for her as well. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately every dog has a different taste. It is a matter of you trying a few different brands to see what he likes. It is most ideal to mix the old food with the new food to help prevent him from getting an upset stomach. If he has a chronic issue with vomiting, I would look for foods that are for sensitive stomachs. You can also add some chicken broth or a few pieces of boiled chicken over his food to help entice him to eat it more quickly. Also know some dogs are slow eaters or nibblers. If he eventually eats his allotted amount by the end of the time, this is okay. If the vomiting continues, I would have your vet take a look at him as this isn't normal. I hope this helps!

The chronic vomiting could be caused by a food allergy so you could try them on a hypoallergenic diet. You could try z/d or d/d but they are prescription diets so it would need to be prescribed by your vet. You could also try a sensitive stomach diet, like Hill's Sensitive stomach which you could find at a pet store. You could also add a probiotic to their diet, like Fortiflora or Proviable.

Based on the information above if she is vomiting after dinner and she is eating rice and pork for dinner I would think the homemade diet is making her vomit. Dogs can have food sensitivity that causes vomiting. I would recommend trying to feed her the Purina dental kibble for both meals and see if it fixes the problem. If not I would recommend taking her to the vet for some basic blood work. In an 8 year old dog who is vomiting I would want to make sure the kidneys and liver are functioning normally. If the blood work is normal I would try to feed her a commercial dog food that is better rounded in vitamins and nutrients/. It is very difficult to make a dog food that has everything our pets need
