Why are my dog's eyes red, watery, with thick brown discharge?

Our 5 year old shephard has a reddish brown covering over both eyes and her eyes are watering with a thick substance.

Poor girl. This looks like she may have a conditon called pannus (ulcerative keratitis), which is an immune mediated condition of the eyes. I would highly recommend taking Mariah in to your local vet for a complete eye exam to have the eyes tested. If she does have this condition then medication can be prescribed to help her eyes normalize. Another possibility is an eye hemorrhage (bleeding) due to trauma, but an up close eye exam should be able to differentiate this. I hope everything works out well for your pet Mariah.
