My dog's nail split and is painful. What can I give before vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | 60 lbs

We are dog sitting a dog and his nail has split up into her paw. He was bleeding but it has stopped. I can tell he is in pain because he won’t let me touch it and keeps licking it. is there a medication I should I’ve him before I can go to the vet.. his parents will be here later tonight but are not being helpful.

Hi there! Split toe nails are definitely painful but as long as you have a vet appointment soon, I wouldn't worry about doing anything at home. The vet will need to sedate Huck and remove the toenail to allow a new nail to grow back. Your vet will also probably send home some antibiotics to prevent infection and some pain medication.     Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not recommend giving Stella anything over the counter for pain. I agree with your vet though, I would make sure she leaves her paw alone. If needed, you can get her an Elizabethan collar. Once the nail is removed tomorrow, your vet will give her some pain meds then! Good luck!
