Why is my 8-week kitten lethargic with diarrhea and swollen anus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

I bought an 8 week old kitten 2 days ago and he has had diarrhea since we got him and has been very lethargic, I found out the previous owner had given him a worming tablet the day before we got him which she gave to me when I picked up the cat. I discovered that they were not to be given to any kitten under 12 weeks, any advice would be great as I am starting to worry for his health. He also has a swollen anus although he is still eating (dry biscuits) and drinking water fine.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Lethargy & diarrhea is quite concerning in such a young kitten. I am a bit worried about dehydration, even with him drinking. Most of these issues are due to intestinal parasites, such as roundworms & coccidian. Your worming tablet may take care of the roundworms, but you really need to have the stool examined for any other problems. A consult with your veterinarian will be most beneficial in getting Beans onto the road to great health. Take care.
