My dog is warm and uncomfortable after surgery. Is a fever normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Karelian Bear Dog | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 9 months old

My dog just had a operation for lymph node tissue samples this morning. It is now night time over here and he seems to be in discomfort. I have gotten medication for the pain but cannot start it until tomorrow. He is eating and drinking, but feels warm in certain areas (in his ears, his paws, around his neck.) which I am worried about. He also is making noises from time to time like he's in discomfort. Is a fever normal after an operation (Basing it off his warmt, don't have a thermometer).

This can be normal after a surgery. You can gently place a cold compress around his neck which will reduce the pain and inflammation. As long as he's eating and drinking he will be fine. The first day is always the worst. Please give the pain medication first thing in the morning. Keeping Bastian quiet and out for short potty walks only will reduce the chance of increased swelling from over activity. You can also do some massage or petting to soothe him and it will relax his muscles so he can rest. If you still have questions in the morning please contact your veterinarian as they are familiar with the procedure and the expected recovery. They can add an additional pain medication too if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Bastian.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! An slightly elevated temperature can be normal same day after surgery. or even a day after. However, temperatures above 103.5 in dogs, however, indicates a potential problem such as an infection. I would get a thermometer and get Bastian's temperature rectally. If it is at or above 103.5, please call your veterinarian. I hope this helps and I hope Bastian feels better soon!
