Dog has green eye discharge. What's the cause? Should I use saline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 86 lbs

A week ago my German Shepherd woke up with bright green gunk coming out of her eye. My mother (a veterinarian) told me to just use a salt and water mix to flush her eye with. As of yesterday it looked like it was clearing up. This morning she woke up and now both of her eyes are disgusting and have bright green gunk in them. Should I continue with saline rinse? And what do you think could be the issue?

Yes the saline rinse will help but this sounds like conjunctivitis and it will heal more quickly with an ophthalmic antibiotic. Dogs get conjunctivitis from eye irritation from pollution, pollen, smoke in the air and sometimes from a cold. It is usually a secondary bacterial infection that causes the green discharge and that is why the antibiotics will heal it faster.
