My dog is always hungry. What's the best way to feed him daily?

Hi! We brought home a 6 yrs old Chihuahua mix from the shelter. It's a very beautiful and smart dog. How many times a day has to be fed? We give him twice a day but he seems to be hungry all the time. Which it's the best way to feed him? We take him out 3 and 4 times a day for numbers 1 and 2? Thanks a lot.

Congrats on your new dog, Paps is very handsome! He should be fed twice a day, and I would feed him according to the instructions on the food package. Divide the recommended daily allotment into two equal servings, and feed him morning and evening. Now if that's what you are doing and he seems very hungry, then divide the daily allotment into three portions and feed him morning, noon, and evening. Be sure to feed him a high quality dog food brand, as those will have the best ingredients to help keep him full and satisfied. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps, enjoy your handsome boy :-)

I'm not sure about what i should to feed my puppy?
Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)

Chanel is 3 kgs, I think she’s overweight. When we first got her (she was 3 months) we gave her 1 cup each meal but after checking we served her food according to the serving chart on their food’s package, it said to divide 5/8 cups into 3 meals, so
1.5 cups of food per meal sounds like a lot. What you have to remember is that every dog food has a different amount of calories per cup so there is no blanket statement that a certain dog should have so many cups of food per day. It depends on the food you are feeding. You want to use the feeding chart on the bag and feed her to her ideal weight. If it says to divide 5/8 cups into three meals that is what you should do. I cannot tell you if she is overweight without seeing her. Most of the times dogs are not actually continually hungry. They just like the bond of getting something from you. Don't give in or she will be overweight.

You can try splitting his feedings into smaller more frequent meals. Another idea would be to get a slow feed food bowl to slow his eating down. I would also make sure that you are weighing him regularly and feeding according to the growth chart on the food. I would not recommend leaving the food down for him to eat all he wants. This could cause him bad GI upset or more serious issues like bloat. Hope this helps some. Puppies will eat themselves sick if you allow it. Portion sizes for puppies are not one size fits all. Check the back of the bag of food. Manufacturers frequently provide feeding guidelines based on your puppy's age and weight. Feed 3-4 times daily then decrease as the puppy matures until you are feeding twice daily. Since he is extremely food driven, use this to your advantage when training.

How much should I be feeding? I feed nutrena large breed puppy chow and they recommend 2-3 cups for 15-25lb dogs. He weighs less than 15 I think, but still seems extremely hungry after each meal
You should weigh your dog. If you take him to your vet, you can usually weigh him for free. Then follow the instructions on the bag. If they recommend 2-3 cups (daily) for 15 -25 lbs puppies, then a 15 lbs puppy would get 2 cups split up over 4 feeds/day. If your puppy loses condition or weight I suggest you either increase the amount of feed or change (transition over several days) to a better puppy food such as manufactured by Hill's, Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan, etc.

Congratulations on your new addition! At this age, you should be feeding him 3-4 times per day. The amount depends on the brand of food that you choose to feed. He should be eating puppy food, and if you check the bag, there will be a feeding chart, which will tell you the amount to feed for his weight. This amount is the total amount for the day, and you will want to divide that over the 3-4 meals that you feed him. Hope that helps!

I would feed Charley according to the instructions on his food bag label, as each food has a different recommended daily amount. He needs to be fed a puppy formulated food, as he needs higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than an adult dog, and a puppy food will provide that. I would also feed him three times a day. Divide the daily amount recommended on his bag into three equal portions and feed him morning, noon, and evening. Make sure he's up to date on his deworming treatments, as having intestinal parasites will make him hungry all the time.

Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. It looks like this is a repeat question, but in case you didn't see the previous answer, I'll re-post it here: At Maverick's young age, it's best to do 3-4 smaller feedings a day rather than one or two big meals. Every dog will be a little bit different in terms of nutritional demands, based on their metabolism and activity level, and every food is a little different in its calorie content. So, start with what the bag recommends for his size, and adjust it as needed according to what his body shape is doing. You want to be able to easily feel his ribs without seeing them. I would anticipate with Maverick's age and size he should be getting somewhere around 1.5 cups daily total, divided into 3-4 small meals (so, about 3 meals of 1/2 cup each could be a good starting point - but make sure this sounds consistent with the feeding instructions on that bag, since as discussed every food is a little different). My dog is at a healthy weight but is still looking for food, I feed him twice a day 1/2 a can of wet and 1 cup of dry each time, I started to give him an additional cup of dry food mid day should I increase his wet food to a whole can twice a day?
What a great picture of Alfie! The calorie contents of different foods vary so it's hard to say without knowing what brand of food he's getting. However, in general, a 60lb pit bull will require more food than a 60lb dog of a different breed. They tend to be very heavily muscled which burns a lot of calories, and they also tend to be very energetic. He's also young so will require more food than a senior dog. One cup of dry food 3 times a day might just not be enough for him. I would recommend increasing his canned food to one can twice a day, or you can try adding 1/2 cup dry food at feedings. Watch him to make sure he's not gaining too much weight. Also, if he still seems hungry, you may want to have him checked over by his veterinarian. Intestinal parasites and certain metabolic diseases can cause them to be excessively hungry. And some dogs are just hungry all the time, not matter how much they just ate (kind of like people). He’s telling you you’re not feeding him enough. I judge the amount to feed a growing puppy by how they eat. They should be hungry at each meal, and almost finish the food. If he’s ravenous then I gradually increase the amount at each feeding, and also add another meal. If he’s growing quickly you want him to have enough nutrition. As he grows he may not eat as much later and not want the extra meal. It’s fine then to go to three or two meals daily. I don’t worry about them getting fat until they are six months to a year old, then certainly at that point or when he’s fully grown you can reduce the amount or change the food to diet food.
