Why is my newly adopted cat squinting her eye? What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My boyfriend and I adopted a cat 5 days ago and have noticed she has been squinting her right eye. She is a black shorthair about a year old, and she has been fixed. However, we don't have her medical records yet. We've been emailing the agency we adopted her from every day to give us her records but they haven't sent them yet. We're trying to figure out what could be bothering her eye.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and congratulations on your new addition! I’m sorry to hear Stella is having an eye issue. Squinting can be due to a variety of causes, including an eye infection, secondary to an upper respiratory infection, a wound to the cornea, or another underlying issue. I would recommend Stella be evaluated by a veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (eye stain, eye pressure, tear production) and start any eye medications if needed. Good luck!
