My cat has a painful matted leg wound. Is it a bite? Need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

My cat randomly got a matted bump or scab on her leg and I’m not exactly sure where or how she got it or if one of our other cats possibly bit her I’ve never seen something so bad she doesn’t want it messed with and sometimes she’ll hold that leg in the air and it’ll start to shake I’m not sure if this requires a vet or if there’s medicines or home remedies that we could do to help or just letting her lick it ?

This looks like an infected puncture wound from a scratch or bite. Since it is so painful and Coco won't let you touch it I recommend a veterinary exam. They can give her pain medication and clean and drain the infection. When the puss is caught under the skin it is painful and the overlying skin can become damaged and can fall off leaving a large open raw area. If that happens it will take a long time for this to fully heal in this area. With drainage and antibiotics Coco will feel better much sooner and the wound will heal more quickly. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Coco.
